What Is an Annular Eclipse?

Unlike a total eclipse, during an annular eclipse the Moon is slightly farther from Earth and doesn't completely cover the Sun. Instead, a brilliant "ring of fire" remains visible around the Moon's silhouette.

While annular eclipses don't produce the dramatic darkness of totality, the ring of fire effect is breathtaking — and this eclipse offers an impressive 7+ minutes of annularity.

Eye Safety — Never Look Without Protection

Unlike a total eclipse, an annular eclipse is never safe to view without eye protection. The visible ring of sunlight can cause permanent eye damage. You must use certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) throughout the entire event.
